Put two sewer replacement bids side by side and the per-foot rates point the wrong way. CIPP lining bids at $80–$250 for each foot, pipe bursting at $60–$200, while a plain dig quotes just $50–$125 — read only those numbers and open trench wins every time. But a per-foot rate prices the pipe, not what sits above it, and the surface is usually what settles the argument. Three methods, three physical operations

Open trench is an excavation project that happens to install pipe. A machine opens the ground along the entire run — a strip about 2 feet wide — the old pipe comes out, new pipe is laid to grade, and the trench is backfilled. Because the dig is the method, the per-foot band already carries conventional excavation — no separate equipment charge. The trade-off: everything growing or poured on that strip is destroyed and rebuilt at your expense.

Pipe bursting replaces the pipe without excavating the run. Crews dig two pits — launch and receiving — and pull a cone-shaped bursting head through the old line, fracturing it outward into the soil while towing new HDPE pipe into the bore behind it. The old pipe is the guide rail: if a collapsed section stops the cable, bursting is off the menu. When it qualifies, you get new pipe — same size or upsized — with damage limited to the two pits.

CIPP lining (cured-in-place pipe) removes nothing at all. A resin-saturated sleeve is inverted or winched into the cleaned host pipe, pressed against the wall, and cured hard — a new structural pipe formed inside the old one. Its constraint: the liner cures into whatever shape the host holds, so a bellied section stays bellied and ovalized Orangeburg fiber pipe can't be rounded back out. Scale matters too — in old cast iron the bore must be ground clean before resin can bond, so the cast-iron line on a lining bid prices descaling prep (an estimated $15–$75 per foot) instead of demolition and hauling.

The comparison per-foot rates hide: one job — a 50-foot sewer lateral at typical 3–6 ft depth, camera inspection and permit included, no cast iron — priced through our calculator's itemized model, changing only surface and method. Restoration does the work: open trench disturbs the full 2-ft strip (100 sq ft here), bursting two pits totaling about 32 sq ft, and under a slab the job becomes tunneling at $200–$500 per foot — the whole 50-foot path if you dig, an 8-foot access tunnel if you burst.

Over lawn, the dig wins on dollars. Grass is cheap to put back — $250–$1,500 for the whole 100 sq ft scar — so restoration can't rescue bursting's pricier run ($3,000–$10,000 versus $2,500–$6,250) plus its flat mobilization — a typical-case gap of about $3,800 in the dig's favor. Run the lawn case yourself and challenge any bid that inverts it without naming a reason.

Under a driveway, the gap narrows — and carries an asterisk. Concrete restoration prices at $10–$25 per sq ft, so the dig's 100 sq ft strip costs $1,000–$2,500 to repour against $320–$800 for bursting's pits. That still leaves bursting about $3,160 behind at typical — if a 2-foot strip patch is an acceptable finish. That's the model's assumption — and the real decision point: a repoured strip is visible forever, and a finish requiring whole-panel replacement is a bigger restoration than this row prices. Make each bid state in writing which it prices — then price the bursting version of your driveway run against it.

Under the slab, the answer flips outright. Digging to a pipe beneath the house means tunneling the entire path at $200–$500 per foot — $10,000–$25,000 of restoration before any pipe is installed, which is why the open-trench column explodes to $12,925–$33,500. A trenchless method needs only the 8-foot access tunnel, and bursting's all-in $6,025–$19,250 undercuts the dig by about $10,450 at typical — the terrain trenchless was invented for. Depth and mobilization: the two line items that move totals quietly

Depth punishes the dig disproportionately. Every band above prices the standard 3–6 ft burial. Federal trench-safety law arrives early — at 5 ft, OSHA 29 CFR 1926.652 obligates the crew to slope, shore, or shield the cut — and beyond roughly 6 ft a dig stops being a narrow slot: the hole must be benched wider, and the excavated soil turns into its own hauling problem. Open-trench totals climb past anything the cost surveys measure, and because no credible depth multiplier exists in the source data, our calculator refuses to invent one: select a deep run and it flags the estimate as out-of-band, the high figure read as a floor. Trenchless pits still reach full pipe depth, but pits are a smaller excavation than a shored 60-foot trench — deep laterals are a second terrain, after slabs, where the method premium starts paying for itself.

Mobilization is a flat charge wearing a per-foot disguise. Bursting and lining rigs cost the same to bring, set up, and tear down whether they replace 20 feet or 100, and that fixed $1,000–$3,000 never appears in the quoted per-foot rate. Amortized, the distortion shows: $50–$150 added to every foot at 20 feet; $20–$60 at 50; $10–$30 at 100. Hence the rule: the shorter the run and the cheaper the surface, the harder trenchless must work to justify itself; the longer the run and the costlier the surface, the faster the flat charge disappears into the total.

What both bids should show in writing

A method comparison is only as honest as its itemization — check that each bid states:

  • The scope of the per-foot rate. Pipe, labor, and excavation or pits — or something bundled? Bids with different per-foot contents can't be compared until unbundled.
  • Restoration as its own line, with the concrete question answered: strip patch or whole-panel replacement, at what price.
  • The flat mobilization figure on any trenchless bid, stated once as a fixed charge, not smeared across the footage.
  • Camera evidence on both ends: pre-work footage proving the line qualifies for the method, post-work footage proving grade and finish — keep both recordings.
  • The permit and its issuing office, priced inside the $300–$1,500 municipal band rather than waved off as included.
  • Old-pipe handling: cutting, demo, and disposal on a dig or burst through cast iron — or the descaling-prep line on a lining bid — priced explicitly rather than discovered mid-job.
  • The working depth in feet. A bid that doesn't state the depth it priced has reserved the right to reprice it.

A contractor comfortable with this list is quoting a job; one who resists it is quoting an opening position. Insist on the line items and make the bids argue against each other instead of against you.

What is the difference between pipe bursting and CIPP lining?

Can every sewer line be replaced with a trenchless method?
